Graduate Admission

You must have an admission status through the WSU Graduate School to enroll in the certificate program courses. The type of admission you submit depends on how you want to use the credits now or in the future.

  • Using the Credits Toward the Instructional Design Certificate Only:

If you DO NOT wish to use the credits toward a graduate degree now or in the future, you should print the WSU Graduate School Application for Admission form (Print Application Form and Materials) and check "Certificate (major)" in the Enrollment Plans section, listing Instructional Design as the major, then mail the form with a check for $50. Details about this “Certificate “status” can be seen on the Graduate School Web site (Classifications of Graduate Students for Admission; note that students in the Certificate classification who do not wish to use the credits toward a degree are classified as NADC [Not A Degree Candidate].)

You must have a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution to be accepted in the “Certificate “category, and you must submit one set of official transcripts* and letters of recommendation to the Graduate School.

Including the Credits in a Graduate Degree:
    • Students not currently admitted to the Graduate School:
If you are not currently admitted to the Graduate School and you intend to use the credits toward a graduate degree, you should complete the Graduate School application (Print Application Form and Materials) and check the degree program to which you wish to be admitted in the Enrollment Plans section (e.g., MA or EdM), as well as the "Certificate (major)." Be sure to follow all instructions at the Graduate School Admissions Web site. You must submit the application fee with the printed application and one set of official transcripts* to the Graduate School; a second set of official transcripts* must be sent to the department.

Admission to Washington State University Graduate School is a joint decision between the Graduate School and a specific department or college.

The timeframe for admission depends on when you apply:
      • If you are applying more than two months before the semester begins, submit the Graduate School application online or in printed form, including all necessary materials. Also send appropriate information to the department to which you wish to be admitted. See complete directions on the Graduate School Admissions Web site (Online Application Instructions).
      • If you are applying less than two months before the semester begins, print out BOTH the Undecided Graduate Application and the Online Application from the Graduate School Admissions Web site, complete them, attach a check for the $35 application fee, and mail both forms with the check to the Graduate School. See complete directions on the Graduate School Admissions Web site (Online Application Instructions).

    • Students currently admitted to the Graduate School:
If you are already admitted to the WSU Graduate School and want to take the certificate program courses to receive the Instructional Design Certificate, complete a new Graduate School application form (Print Application Instructions), and mark the "Certificate" box in the Enrollment Plans section. You do not need to submit another application fee, transcripts, or letters of recommendation. Please note that you may use the courses for two purposes simultaneously—in your graduate program as well as to obtain the Instructional Design Certificate.

    * For admission to the Graduate School, Washington State University requires official transcripts from each of the following:

    1. Colleges or universities from which any degrees have been granted or are expected and those transcripts that show the last 60 graded semester or 90 graded quarter hours of undergraduate work taken.
    2. Colleges or universities showing graded graduate level (including doctoral) coursework taken after the bachelor's degree.
